iTunes 10.5 Released, Download Now to Prepare for iOS 5 & iCloud

Apple makes global music news with its release of iTunes 10.5 in preparation of iOS 5 and iCloud. The latest version is a major update that includes full iCloud support, in addition to the highly anticipated Wi-Fi syncing feature, which allows anyone to sync an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iTunes wirelessly as long as they’re on the same wifi network.

How to backup your media

iTunes makes it very easy to backup your entire library with AMA music. Go to File – Library – Back up to Disc. Once the window opens you will have the option of backing up your entire libary OR just items that have been added or changed since your last backup.

How to Get Music off your iPod

Please note: This is not a normal operation. This is usually used if you have synched your iPod in one place and can no longer access that library, ie Hard drive failure, etc.
There is a chance if you don’t do it properly you could lose a lot of music. The instructions on the link below are from 2004 but still work as of 2009 (the software just looks a little different in places).

With iTunes 10, the library has been improved with an extra view that adds album artwork where there’s room, instead of the traditional album title next to each song. This smartens up library viewing a lot, and generally underlines the new, clean look of the interface. It’s no revolution, but looks neater. Playlists and iTunes DJ are untouched, and managing your library is as easy as ever. Creating playlists is one of iTunes’ strengths, and it’s still simpler and more user-friendly than the competition.

Syncing iTunes with iPods and other Apple devices is really easy, and there are no longer problems using Mac-formatted devices in iTunes for Windows, or vice versa. Home Sharing is a great way to keep your library across multiple computers at home; it is really easy to set up and means all your computers will automatically have up-to-date libraries.

The biggest change with version 10 is to the iTunes Store. Ping, which is linked to your iTunes account, allows you to create a personal profile and share your purchases and reviews with friends, and artists you like. It looks very much like a basic Facebook News Feed or Twitter, but just about music. At the moment Ping feels underdeveloped. You can’t share your listening habits, like Last.fm, and manual sharing is limited to the iTunes Store, not your own library. There’s no option to share what you’re listening to right now, which is pretty terrible! Ping will surely develop and improve very soon.

The basic library function of iTunes is unparalleled, and syncing with iPods, iPhones and iPads is excellent. iTunes 10’s new social features are interesting, but limited at the moment.

“Automatically add lyrics to your iTunes library”

There’s nothing better than having the lyrics to your favourite songs with you on iTunes. Unfortunately, iTunes doesn’t include a lyrics retrieval tool but you can get round it by adding this program.

iTunes Lyrics importer or “iLyrics” automatically searches the net when you click “Get Lyrics” and downloads the song lyrics based on their titles. It has a huge databank to choose from thanks to the Lyricswiki project which allows users to upload the lyrics of their favourite songs. Because of this, you’re more likely to fine the lyrics of obscure songs rather than other lyrics sites which concentrate more on mainstream offerings.

Normally, iLyrics will give you a direct hit and provide you with exactly the song you were looking for. However, occasionally it will confuse the song with another one but you only have two modes “Update automatically” or “Manual Mode”. If you select the former and it finds the wrong lyrics, note that you’ll lose the old lyrics and they will be replaced by lyrics that may be wrong. If your initial experiments prove to be a bit dodgy, then I’d recommend using the latter mode which gives you control over whether to definitely replace the lyrics or not.

An excellent addition to iTunes which has a huge resource of lyrics to draw from although be careful which mode you use.
